WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Let me start off with an obvious statement - I am, by no means, an expert on beauty pageants.
As a kid I watched them because we only had one TV and my mother loved the pageants, and it was, after all, one of the very first forms of "survivor type" reality shows.
Having said all that - there is something about this year's Miss USA pageant that bothers me. Why is more attention being paid to the runner up, than to the winner?
You have probably seen Miss California trying to answer the question on gay marriage - and yes it was a tough situation to be in. Still - this national attitude that she would have won the competition if only someone else had been asked that particular question is "baloney."
Let me say this loud and clear. Miss California did not lose the competition. Miss North Carolina won it - fair and square - by excelling in all judged categories.
So - on behalf of your hometown, Kristen Dalton, we congratulate you. You have done Wilmington and the state of North Carolina proud.
That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
