Tenth case of rabies confirmed in New Hanover Co.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Ten cases of rabies have been confirmed in New Hanover County so far this year.

According to state lab results, a raccoon and a fox were carriers of the disease.

Friday, a dog owner reportedly witnessed his pet fighting with a racoon on Upland Drive, and Saturday a resident saw his pet dog fighting with a fox.

Each dog was current on their rabies vaccinations and have received booster shots within 72 hours.

Low cost rabies vaccinations will be offered at the following veterinary hospitals during regular office hours during the week of April 20-25.

This service will be offered at the reduced rate of $6.00 per animal, but pet owners are advised to ask if additional office charges apply.
