WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Wilmington's public radio, WHQR, celebrated 25 years of broadcasting over the airways Wednesday.
The station was founded by displaced opera lovers and first went on air in downtown Wilmington in 1984.
The non-profit radio station thrived by becoming a community station supported and staffed by public radio lovers.
The station said they held a pledge drive recently that was a huge success. They were able to raise enough money to keep them on air for at least another year.
WHQR is now broadcasting in high definition and are planning to provide more programming and music options for their listeners.
