FORT FISHER, NC (WECT) - The first annual Seahorse Sprint 5k road race took place Sunday at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher.

About 200 runners laced up to kick off the "Party for the Planet 2009" a week of eco events around the globe for this week highlighted by Earth Day, which is April 22nd.

Organizers say the event is a good way to show off the aquarium, get folks outside, and to promote green events.

"It's a green event," said Amy Kilgore of the aquarium. "Because we are giving away organic cotton t-shirts and we are giving away reusable shopping bags for people to use when they go to the grocery store, and we are recycling our water and soda bottles."

Pleasure Island native, and Ashley High School cross country coach, Shawn McKee won the race with a time of 18:06.  For the women, Erin Hogston finished 1st with a time of 19:54.

The aquarium hopes to add a 10k to next year's event.
