WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - More than 15 percent of the people living in New Hanover County has a disability.
More than 150 disabled people took part in the 8th Annual Accessible Recreation Day (ARD) at UNCW, where they were given the opportunity to try nearly 25 activities using equipment adapted for physical or sensory limitations.
The day included many events including ping pong, wheelchair basketball, seated yoga, amputee golf and tennis, and rock climbing.
ADR also marked the launch of Accessible Golf of Wilmington, a program offering free golf instruction courses and golfing opportunities for local individuals with physical impairments.
The event was organized by the Coastal Carolina Partnership for Accessible Recreation, and is one of few accessible recreation programs of its type in the nation.
