NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Thursday, officials at Adult Day Services were told their operation is being put on hold.
New Hanover County will freeze their services for 7 clients until July in an effort to save money.
The facility provides supervision and support for aging adults and their families, some of whom have been clients for years.
The decision also affects families at Elderhaus, as well as staff who will have their hours cut in an attempt to avoid layoffs.
"This is a very close knit family," said Jennifer Riker with Adult Day Services. "We have gone through illnesses together. We have gone through deaths together. We are all one big family. it's the Adult Day Services family. This is devastating! Its devastating!"
Riker said she is trying to raise money herself to keep the operation going throughout the months of May and June.
Riker released the following statement:
7 clients that are funded by State Adult Day Care Funds, which are administered by the New Hanover County Department of Social Services will stop receiving services on April 30, 2009, because there is no money left for this fiscal year. In July these clients will be able to restart at the center. We are trying to raise money on our own in order for these 7 clients to be able to continue to receive services during May and June. The center is open and accepting new clients. This effects only the 7 clients that receive this funding.
