WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Earlier this week I did a commentary on the $19,000 trip nine City of Wilmington officials took to Washington.
WECT's news department discovered the New Hanover County Government representatives also took a similar trip to Washington D.C., and out of fairness, I feel I have to address that issue as well.
But I have a different opinion on this one. You see, instead of sending an entire legion, the county only sent three people.
Instead of eating at fancy restaurants like Ruth's Chris, the county ambassadors ate at Cracker Barrel - with at least one report the dumplings were great.
Instead of taking their spouses, the county leaders traveled alone, and instead of being reimbursed hundreds of dollars for mileage, they used county owned transportation.
We understand that there was real business for both the city and the county to do in Washington, but these two examples show us there is clearly a right way and a wrong way to get the job done.
Do the math - $19,000 versus less than $4,000. Looks like the county was around five times more efficient on this one -and it appears their travel guidelines are a lot more buttoned-up.
That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
