NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - There will be another name to consider when the executive committee of the New Hanover County Democratic Party meets to decide who will replace Sheriff Sid Causey.
Thursday afternoon, David Smithey, a retired major from the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, will announce that he wants the job.
Earlier this year Causey announced that he will retire July 1 and recommended Chief Deputy Ed McMahon for the job.
The 64-year-old sheriff said he decided to bow out in the middle of his 4-year term to take advantage of a retirement incentives package offered by the county as a way to cut the budget.
The executive committee will meet April 20 to discuss his replacement, and New Hanover County Commissioners will have the final say.
