WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - UNCW students reached out to senior citizens in the community Wednesday morning.
Graduate-level UNC Wilmington gerontology students hosted a job fair at the YMCA, for senior citizens looking for work or volunteer opportunities.
"The number of older adults in our community is rapidly increasing as employment numbers and retirement rates fall," said student and event coordinator Lauren Segur in a statement. "This is creating some big problems for the Wilmington elderly and those responsible for their care. We cannot ignore these problems."
More than 20 organizations, including WECT, had representatives at the event.
One participant said the job fair was important for senior citizens, especially during the current economic state.
"With the economy in the shape that it's in, it's important that more older people get out and have an opportunity to earn money and have an opportunity to volunteer and give to their community," said Betty Welday.
The job fair also doubled as a health expo. Participants were able to play Wii bowling, receive chair massages, and learn how to keep their minds and bodies active.
