PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Friday was the deadline for dogs in the Topsail Humane Society Shelter to be turned over to the Pender County Animal Shelter.

Pender County officials sent the organization a notice that they were not allowed to keep dogs on the property on Lewis Road and would have to move the animals.

Residents who live near the shelter have mixed feelings about having the kennel nearby.

"If they are going to stay then they need stay within the law," said Dennis Block who is against the kennel.  "They don't need to try to law about it. It's not been an active kennel."

"They pay for that place," said Jonathan Capps who doesn't mind the kennel.  "If they like dogs and they like to have them over there that's their business you know."

A Topsail Humane Society worker said most of the nine dogs that had to be moved have been fostered or adopted.
