WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Members say Port City Health Club was one of a kind.  It was a place known for fitness and friendship, but the gym has closed its doors.

Tuesday, the Port City Health Club had a sign on the door saying the business is closing, an announcement that came as a surprise to co-owner Judi Nickels.

"I also had no idea until yesterday," said Nickels.  "The operation of the gym was happening through my husband. He's disappeared and I can't comment on where he is or what he's doing."

This is a familiar story for the location.  About a year ago, the business was under different ownership known as Peak Fitness until it suddenly closed as well.

That's when Charles Nickels and his wife Judi bought the location.

"Those who aren't doing good business go by the way-side," Charles told WECT when he first bought the business.  "Those who are, get their business - it's a winning cycle.  I think its healthy for all of us to be checked on from time to time. It keeps everybody honest It keeps everybody doing good business."

Now, Nickels will be getting his check up.  His wife Judi said the situation is in the hands of lawyers.

Judi Nickels offered a statement regarding the situation that reads:

Let me offer my sincere apologies. I'm not going to offer any excuses but rather reassure you that I'm doing everything in my power to have all of your memberships transferred to another local gym. Or selling the gym, as is to an interested party so you can remain in the facility to which you are familiar. Suffice is to say I am the owner and the onus of this falls on my shoulders.

Judi said she has put a stop to all automatic bank drafts.  She will respond to all questions and concerns by email,

The Wilmington Family YMCA will offer a free 60 day trial membership for any Port City Health Club member.
