BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Brunswick County law enforcement made several arrests in part two of a drug roundup that began in December 2008.
Over 50 people were targeted and identified by Operation April Fools, which focused on street level drug deals throughout Brunswick County.
"This morning we are serving search warrants and picking up 94 suspects that have been involved with narcotics activities over the last three months," said Captain Gene Caison. "Hopefully, we will take a lot of them off the street today."
The Drug Unit also targeted mid-level suppliers, prescription medication dealers, and some of the area's larger traffickers during the roundup.
Many of the targets were repeat offenders, and all of the targets are habitual users and sellers of illegal narcotics to include: marijuana, heroin, powder cocaine, crack cocaine, and prescription medication.
"It's our hopes to make the community safer and allow people to enjoy their homes and allow their kids to play in the yard without living in fear of people selling drugs on the street corner or having a shootout between drug dealers," said Sheriff John Ingram.
Sheriff's deputies were able to apprehend 45 people as of 1:30 Wednesday afternoon.
Part one of the roundup, Operation First Step, took place in December 2008, where deputies arrested more than 50 drug dealers.
