PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A repair shop on Harley Road in Pender County was destroyed by a fire Tuesday night.
Three volunteer fire departments battled the flames at Huframs Small Engine Repair. Firefighters say they brought in extra water because of the explosive materials inside the garage.
"With some of the other materials that are there, there are several LP gas tanks around the building that was destroyed," said Pender County Emergency Management Director Eddie King. "A situation where the fire occurred maybe later in the night when people had been asleep it could have gotten a lot worse before it was discovered."
Sheriff's deputies took the owner of the garage away from the scene, because he kept trying to enter the burning business.
Investigators are expected to return to the scene to determine what caused the fire.
