Properly disposing pills at New Hanover Regional Medical Center

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Dozens showed up at New Hanover Regional Medical Center Saturday to discard old prescription medications.

People came from as far away as Calabash to dispose of old pills in an environmentally friendly way.

Local law enforcement was also on hand to take some of the pills, so they aren't sold on the streets.

Experts say there are also ways you can properly get rid of your old pills at home.

"The environmental protection agency, as far as disposing medications from your home, has recommended putting tablets in a detergent container and then adding some water to dissolve it," said Kathy Rawlings of New Hanover Regional Medical Center. "Adding things like kitty litter, coffee grounds, that sort of thing."

Rawlings said the medical center may hold more pill disposing events in the future.
