WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A couple years ago, Keep America Beautiful and the City of Wilmington joined efforts to keep dowtown Wilmington clear of cigarette butts by installing receptacles.

Cigarette butts are the most common pollution item on the planet, and before the recepticals were put into place in 2007, more than 3,000 butts were found on the ground within a 2 block radius.

Cigarette litter in downtown Wilmington is down by 65 percent, but butts can still be found scatterd around the area.  It is up to each smoker to keep the city free of the litter.

Jennifer O'Keefe, who is part of Keep America Beautiful, said that many smokers don't realize that snubbing their cigarettes out on the sidewalk, or throwing it into the storm drain is littering.

Downtown Wilmington shops and businesses have made an effort to rid the streets of butts during the day, but when the bars open cigarettes light up the night.

Over 150 volunteers will be cleaning up the streets of Wilmington this weekend in effort to prepare the area for the Azalea Festival.
