WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Some local heroes were recognized at the Wilmington City Council meeting Tuesday evening.

Mayor Bill Saffo and Police Chief Ralph Evangelous honored five Wilmington Police officers and one citizen for their services.

Each person saved lives with their quick thinking.

Officer John Musacchio earned the Medal of Valor, the police department's highest honor, after he confronted and disarmed a man who had been shooting at emergency workers.

"It was great. I loved having them present me with an award," said Musacchio.  "It felt good to be recognized for something that you do, but every day there's officers on the street that do a lot of good that are never even recognized."

Citizen Harry Rivenbark was honored for allowing police to use his boat to perform a rescue.
