WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Area mayors have declared this week "Plant an Azalea Week," in honor of the upcoming Azalea Festival.
Mayors of Wilmington, Wrightsville, Kure, and Carolina Beaches are encouraging people to plant azaleas throughout the week.
City officials said there has been a recent decrease in the tradition of planting the old southern favorite.
Several plant nurseries are getting involved by selling azaleas at half price.
The owner of Lou's Flower Patch said a new type of the plant has helped recent sales.
"The encore is the most famous right now, and the cool thing about it is you get more than one bloom. It blooms in the fall, winter, and spring," said owner Lou King.
Garden centers say they hope for growth in sales as more people with green thumbs purchase azaleas during the week.
