My Turn, Your Turn: Recent county layoffs

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Several years ago a company I worked for went through layoffs.  The next day, after several people lost their jobs, the boss at one of the stations showed up to work driving a brand new Jag.

Oddly enough, one event had nothing to do with other.  Some people knew he had been working on that purchase for months.  But I can't even begin to imagine how those people felt - probably something akin to being slapped in the face.  It was just bad taste and terrible timing.

This came to mind because of what happened at the county office building this week.   On Tuesday, twenty-seven people learned they no longer had jobs.  A day later the office building was being remolded with new carpeting.

I know the carpeting was ordered weeks ahead of time.  I know the work was probably necessary, and I also know it was not so expensive that it cost someone their job.  But just like that boss with his new sports car - it looks bad - and it's in poor taste.

To those county workers who lost their jobs, you are in my prayers.  Hopefully one day the county will roll out the red carpet and welcome you back.

That's my turn.  Now it's your turn.  To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at
