WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - City Solid Waste crews are working a regular schedule to pick up yard debris left from Tropical Storm Hanna.

City of Wilmington Solid Waste customers should put their trash, recycling and yard debris out by 7:30 AM on their regular pickup days.

The amount of additional debris has slowed crews down, but residents should leave the debris at the curb and it will be picked up as soon as possible.

Following are some tips to make pickup quicker:

The city asks that citizens be patient as cleanup continues. Anyone with questions should call the city's Division of Solid Waste Management at 341-7875.

Brunswick County will not be picking up storm debris.  However, no decision has been made on whether fees for the landfill will be waived.  We will let you know the decision when it has been made.

Questions concerning debris in Brunswick County can be directed to Operation Services at 253-2515.

Because early damage assessments show very little vegetative debris following Tropical Storm Hanna, New Hanover County will not offer free yard waste collection and disposal.

Without large amounts of yard waste, collection is not economically feasible.

Residents in the unincorporated areas of New Hanover County, who have vegetative debris, do have options:

The following companies accept yard waste for a fee:

A number of private companies also offer debris pick up and removal for a fee.  Check the yellow pages under Tree Service.

Mulching and composting of yard waste is always encouraged.

Residents of Wilmington, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Wrightsville Beach should check with their respective municipalities

Pender County won't pick up vegetative debris.  Storm debris can be burned (a burning permit may be required) or composted on your own land.

There are two facilities in Pender County that you may haul your debris to and pay to dispose of it:

1) Wilmington Materials: 910.763.4569 - Highway 421, Wilmington (just over the Pender/NHC Border)
2) Running Deer Landfill: 910.231.3348 - Located behind 7390 Hwy 210 in RockyPoint (behind the water system ground storage tank).

For those of you who live on state maintained roads and are accustomed to piling your vegetative debris on the side of the road. The County has had NO indication that the State plans to pickup the debris at this time.

The Town of Carolina Beach Operations Department will pick up storm-related debris beginning Wednesday, September 17.  All debris must be curbside by 5:00pm on September 16th. .

This special vegetative debris pick-up is to assist residents with clean-up of vegetative debris only as a result of Tropical Storm Hanna. There may be a charge for other debris not associated with Tropical Storm Hanna.

Residents are asked to cut the debris into small pieces and bag smaller debris such as leaves. Please place the debris within the right-of-way for pick-up. Please do not cover any storm drains, hydrants, water meters or sewer clean-outs.
