WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - At precisely noon on September 8, the Wilmington television market went digital.
As expected, there are some glitches and we know at least a few of our viewers are struggling to see our signal.
Fixing those problems is the gritty work of this transition, but the switch also comes with celebration.
Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo and FCC Chairman Kevin Martin flipped the symbolic big switch.
Wilmington is going first, as a test run for a switch the other 209 TV markets in the country will make in February.
Broadcasters and local and federal officials gathered at City Hall for ceremonies before the big moment.
Even Raycom CEO Paul McTear was at the event. He is the head of the company that owns WECT.
For WECT, WSFX, and other broadcasters, the switch is both a technical test and an unprecedented educational challenge.
WECT's general manager Gary McNair, McTear, and Saffo were all along for a trip to Washington in May when Wilmington was selected by the FCC for this test.
McTear said the lessons learned here will help TV stations and TV viewers around the country.
