WILMINGTON -- Just before 10 Thursday morning, Robinson R22 helicopter crashed on Carolina Beach Road across from the new Beau Rivage Harris Teeter Supermarket.
A witness said they heard a loud boom and saw the aircraft engulf in flames.
According to the NC Highway Patrol, Captain John Miller of the Wilmington Fire Department died in the crash. He was the only person aboard the aircraft.
Miller, 51 years old, has been with the WFD since 1990. He was a captain at Station #5 on Wellington Avenue.
Officials said the accident occurred while Miller was off duty flying a privately owned helicopter.
"This is an unexpected tragedy that has impacted not just our department, but our community. I say on behalf of the entire department that we are deeply saddened to lose such a fine public servant. Our thoughts and prayers are with John's family," said Wilmington Fire Chief Sam Hill.
Friday, black drapes were hung on Station #5 and on Downtown Headquarters in honor of Miller.
The crash is being investigated by the FAA and NTSB. According to officials it could take up to 9 months to determine the cause of the accident.
Robinson Helicopter representatives are also on scene working on a preliminary report, which will be available in about a week.
It is standard protocol for company representatives to be on scene when one of their products crash.
