CDC Sponsors Seminar on Housing Study

BRUNSWICK COUNTY -- Residents and public officials of Brunswick County gathered at Brunswick Community College on Friday for a seminar sponsored by the county wide Community Development Corporation (CDC).

The goal of the seminar was to hear findings on a housing study gathered by the University of North Carolina.

CDC's mission is to find affordable housing for teachers, law enforcement officers, firefighters and healthcare workers.

The study showed that because of escalating housing prices those workers are having a hard time finding homes in Brunswick county.

According to the study, the average income in Brunswick County for essential workers was about $27,000/year in 2005. The cost of a household was about $37,000/year.

Despite the negative results of the study, the CDC is happy to have data to work with.

"Today was a milestone, like I said, it was a culmination of a year's worth of work. Last summer we had several summits and made the community aware of what we were doing with the housing for a central work force, but we needed the data. it's always the data that brings credibility to an issue," Resea Willis of Community Development Corporation said.
