WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - More rain is expected across much of North Carolina, only a few days after severe weather and heavy rain prompted watches and warnings across the eastern part of the state.
An area of low pressure in the Gulf of Mexico is expected to intensify along the Carolina coastline. Rain will overspread the area Friday night, and heavy rain is expected Saturday morning. As much as 1 to 2 inches of rain can be expected from the weekend system. The area has already seen several heavy rainfall events in the last 2 months, including the remnants of Hurricane Ida, and several coastal lows that have caused minor flooding. Rivers and streams are already full from those rains. Additional rains may be a concern for river flooding.

The heavy rain has prompted several changes to holiday parades. The Bladenboro parade has been canceled for Saturday morning. The Topsail Beach parade has also been canceled, and the mayor says it will likely not be rescheduled.
Behind the system temperatures are expected to drop dramatically. Lows Saturday night along the coast are expected to be in the low to mid 30's. Farther inland, temperatures will likely drop below freezing, but all precipitation will have ended. Some areas to the north could have problems with isolated wet elevated roads and bridges getting very close to the freezing mark. At this time, wintry weather or freezing temperatures aren't expected to cause problems in the Cape Fear region.
The same system is bringing snow to parts of the deep south. In Houston TX, about an inch of snow fell as the cold air changed to snow. Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama are also expected to see snow Friday night from the rare December snow storm.
