COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Columbus County election officials conducted a hand-and-eye count for the Chadbourn Town Council race.
More than two weeks after the election, the town of Chadbourn has finally elected a town council member. After three separate counts, Rashad Roberts was able to retain his seat on council.
Four poll workers counted the more than 300 votes and tallied them manually on paper.
Council candidate Billy Leonard requested the hand count. On election night, he was declared the winner, but provisional ballots changed the outcome of the race.
After more than a half hour of counting and re-counting, the Board of Elections certified incumbent Rashad Roberts as the winner.
"I'm relieved that it's over, not only for me, but for the people of chadbourn... and we have a great democratic process," said Roberts.
The board of elections also reviewed three challenges from races around the county. They decided to hold hearings for the Brunswick Commission race, as well as the Sandyfield and Fair Bluff mayors races.
Those hearings will be held November 30th.
