TOPSAIL BEACH, NC (WECT) - Police are urging swimmers at Topsail Beach to use caution while they are in the ocean after an alligator was spotted Wednesday.
Beach visitors saw the alligator just after 4pm near Anderson Blvd. Police showed up to clear the water while officers and firefighters attempted to remove the alligator using ropes and netting.
Witnesses say the alligator was about four to five feet long. Similar reports of alligator sightings in the area have been circulating for a week from North Topsail to Surf City, and now Topsail Beach.
Chief Sam Gervase said emergency crews were unsuccessful at their attempts to remove the alligator, but will continue to patrol the area.
