WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A new project is in place to discourage and reduce panhandling in the Cape Fear region.
Officials with the City of Wilmington and New Hanover County gathered Wednesday to unveil the target locations for the "Make a Change" meters.
Instead of giving money to people on the street, the meters are intended to collect money to help the homeless.
All the money will go directly to institutions best suited to helping the area's homeless and struggling citizens.
"All the money that comes through the meters will be collected and deposited to the United Way for the ten year plan to end chronic homelessness in an account," said Dan Ferrell, the ten year plan project manager. "That money will be distributed at the discretion of the ten year plan board and divided up to agencies that serve the chronic homeless in our area."
