WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - When she was just a small child, Mary Gaddy knew exactly what she wanted to be when she grew up, and that was a teacher.
In 1969, Mary was featured in the Star News as one of the new teachers at Wilmington's Sunset Park Elementary School.
Last month, she was featured again, this time about her retirement after 41 years in the classroom, all at Sunset Park Elementary.
This kindergarden class is where Mary wound up her teaching career, a career that has changed with the times, and with so much time in the classroom, it will be near impossible to replace Mary at Sunset Park.
Now that the final long walk to the lunchroom with the students is over, Mary is officially in retirement, which includes spending lots of time at the beach and enjoying her four grandchildren, but she will miss the classroom.
Because of her longevity in the classroom and devotion to teaching our young children, we honor Mary Gaddy as our July Cape Fear Hero.
