Gavin Brooks

Gavin Brooks is foremost a landscape painter best known for atmospheric landscape compositions of coastal themes and pastoral vistas.

Layering years of drawing and classical atelier training with a contemporary painting approach she emerged with a unique style where luminosity and abstraction are united in a broad range of sophisticated compositions.

The emphasis blends spirited brushwork, strong design, tonal unity and the decisive use of neutrals to support color relationships. Gavin is driven by a pursuit for an elegant and modern presentation of emotional content in nature. . “I especially like humidity, weather and miles of air for the effects contrast and color in the outdoors”.

John Poon

His numerous professional awards and honors include "Best of Show" Society of Western Artists; Arts for the Parks Annual National Juried Exhibition; The Artist Magazine Annual National Juried Competition; The Sonoma Plein Air, Sedona Plein Air; and The Rocky Mountain Annual Plein Air Paint Out.

Encouraged by the wealth of landscape and artist interpretation in the Bay Area and with such early experiences as Van Gogh’s exhibition at De Young Museum in San Francisco, John’s appreciation of art emerged at an early age.

A childhood full of drawing and painting foreshadowed an artistic future: after completing four years in the U.S. Coast Guard, he attended and graduated from the Academy of Art College (AAC) in San Francisco, winning numerous student awards and scholarships. After graduation, John accepted the AAC’s offer to remain at the college as an instructor of painting and drawing, and eventually served as Director of Foundations overseeing all Freshmen Drawing, and Color and Design classes.

Since its beginnings in 1984, David Leadman and Nancy Marshall of Walls Gallery have spent the years passionately involved with fine art.

Nestled in the trees at what is geographically the center of town, the small gallery houses truly remarkable work by local, national, and international artists as well as a gilding studio and conservation framing facility. Art in the Southeastern US has been all but confined to the formal portrait. But following the advent of air conditioning, people from outside the South have disembarked on the white sand beaches along with their cultural habit.

Although one must still be born in Wilmington to be from Wilmington, the financial and cultural influx accompanying these "outsiders" has been embraced, allowing all the arts in Wilmington to set higher standards. That change in standards has tapped a willingness on the part of Walls' owners to teach Art 101, one on one, at the drop of a hat - often several times a day.

The success of those lessons is measured in wide eyes and oh-now-I-get-its: the first steps to acquiring one's own passion for art. David and Nancy are painters themselves with a shared admiration of printmaking, gilding, and restoration. They provide a combined 54 years, and counting, of experience which takes the form of development of private and corporate art collections, frame making, care of art work, and consultations in clients' homes.
