    Scientists testing Cape Fear River water who discovered Gen-X also found elevated levels of a chemical called 1,4-dioxane. 1,4-dioxane is an emerging contaminant that has caused liver and kidney damage to laboratory rats chronically exposed to 1,4-dioxane in their drinking water, and labeled as a "probable human carcinogen" by the EPA.
