LELAND, NC (WECT) - Four children who live with their grandparents in Leland are without a home after it was destroyed from a fire started by a Christmas tree.

The family's home of having a merry Christmas went up in flames around noon Tuesday, as a symbol of Christmas caused the tragedy.

According to firefighters, faulty wiring from the lights on an artificial tree sparked the fire.

In the aftermath, homeowner Linda Ransom's eyes swelled with tears as she looked at the rubble with one of her grandchildren.

Linda, her husband, and their four grandchildren lived in the home for a decade.  Luckily for them no one was home the tree caught fire.

Firefighters warn the colorful lights can be dangerous and should be used with caution.

"They need to make sure they have them on surge protectors or directly plugged in," said Asst. Chief Ronnie Hayes.  "Do not plug in more than three strands of lights in together at one time."

"Don't leave them on," said Linda. "Unplug your trees.  Make sure you unplug them when you leave your house.  I was gone for only 20 minutes, at most."

With help from the Red Cross, it looks like the Ransom family may now be spending Christmas in a motel room.

Ransom has no insurance on her home.  Friends and family members are asking for donations of any kind.

If you would like to help the family with financial donations contact the Cape Fear Chapter of the American Red Cross.
