WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Part of the new Cross City Trail opened Friday morning.
The section runs along Eastwood Road between Cardinal Drive and Military Cutoff Road.
Mayor Bill Saffo was on hand to dedicate the two mile path. The trail is open to walkers, bikers, and joggers.
Eventually it will stretch ten miles, all the way to the drawbridge at Wrightsville Beach.
"I feel that as time goes on with ten miles of this alternative mode of transportation a lot more people will be using it. We've already had calls to our office from around the community saying how can we get a portion of that trail through our neighborhood, so we can already see the benefits from it," said Mayor Bill Saffo.
All ten miles of the trail should be completed within seven years.
