OCEAN ISLE BEACH -- Dozens of friends and family members of the students who died in a fire in an Ocean Isle Beach house fire last October gathered Friday afternoon for the unveiling of a memorial.
It is a large brass cross with a granite monument listing the victims name near the Ocean Isle Beach Bridge.
The town's mayor spoke during the ceremony where biographies of the victims were read aloud.
"I like the idea of her being at rest somewhere and I've never entirely been able to come entirely with how she died," said Kaaren Mann who is the mother of Lauren Mahon.
"We remembered those who are no longer with is. We recognized those who are with us, and we celebrated their memories," said Mayor Debbie Smith.
The monument was a gift from a resident.
Mayor Smith said they decided to unveil the monument today, seven months after the fire to give the families time to heal.
