WILMINGTON -- WECT General Manager Karl Davis died at the age of 59 as the result of a motorcycle accident.
Karl loved to ride his Yamaha motorcycle.
The accident happened on Highway 210 in the Rowan area of Bladen County on Saturday afternoon. The State Patrol said Karl's bike briefly veered off the pavement. He over-corrected, hit a rough patch of asphalt, and was thrown from the motorcycle.
No one else was injured.
Karl was a remarkable leader for our television station and for our community.
Our viewers have come to know him best for his Consider This commentaries.
The commentaries were only the most visible of his duties as the Vice President and General Manager of WECT, a position he's held for just over three years.
Karl was active in a variety of organizations and causes around the community. He was an enthusiastic supporter of Downtown Wilmington and charities such as The Red Cross and the Carolina Canines Group.
Around our building, Karl was a friendly and enthusiastic boss, making key decisions and trusting his employees to carry them out.
Karl grew up in Albany, New York and worked in television in New York and California before coming to WECT.
Among Karl's survivors is his wife, Kathleen Baylies and his two children.
The memorial service for Karl will be Friday, January 18 at 10:30 a.m. at Thalian Hall, 310 Chestnut Street, Wilmington, NC 28401.
