RALEIGH, NC (WECT) - North Carolina could soon be taxing people who download music, ringtones, movies, and software.
Tuesday, the Revenue Laws Study Committee met with the Legislature to suggest that the state and local tax be applied to the electronic transactions.
College students at UNCW said they won't download as much if the tax is imposed.
"If you think about it, most of the people who download music are college and high school students," said sophomore Bailey O'Donnell. "I know me and my friends don't have an extra couple of cents for every dollar we spend on i-Tunes or whatever music downloading company we are using."
If the tax is added, NC could collect $8 million next year while local governments could collect nearly $4 million.
