BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Some elementary students in Southport are learning how to stay healthy.

Dosher Memorial Hospital teamed up with Southport Elementary School to focus on creating a healthier community.

Thursday, the hospital gave the students two fitness signs which will be displayed on their walking trail.

During the assembly students and teachers competed in jump rope and hula-hoop challenges.

Experts say fitness at school is important, but the best lessons come from home.

"The kids emulate what their parents do," said Dan Jacobs with Dosher Memorial Hospital.  "Getting their parents to engage in healthy, active lifestyles at home is gonna carry on, is gonna basically affect these children, not just now but into the future and into adulthood."

Dosher Memorial Hospital plans to partner with more schools to make sure kids know the importance of staying fit.
