Claire Simms

Claire Simms was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. Her interest in journalism began at an early age, when in fifth grade she played a news anchor in a school play, and she has never looked back!

Claire is a proud graduate of the University of Georgia and the Grady College of Journalism andMass Communication.  While in college, she reported for and later produced a student-run program called "Georgia Gameday," highlighting the Georgia football team and the fans who love it.  Claire also reported, anchored and produced for the University's news program "NewSource 15."  She interned at WSB TV  in Atlanta and later worked there on the assignment desk.

Claire came to Wilmington from WPGA in Macon, GA, where she was a reporter and  managing editor.  While in Macon, she covered a little bit of everything, from Robins Air Force Base to the famous Cherry Blossom Festival.  She also co-hosted the station's Friday night football show.

She joined the WECT news team as a reporter in August 2008, and became a weekend anchor in February 2009.

Claire was recently named the 2009 North Carolina Reporter of the Year by the Radio and Television News Directors Association of the Carolinas.  She also earned first place for a political/election story for her coverage of a John McCain campaign stop in Wilmington in 2008.

When she's not working, Claire likes to spend time on the beach, explore the Cape Fear area, decorate cakes, and visit family and friends back in the Peach State.
