Fatal Fire Kills Seven Students

OCEAN ISLE BEACH, N.C. -- Seven college students are dead and six others were taken to the hospital after a massive fire broke out at a home in Ocean Isle.

The fire broke out Sunday shortly before 7:00 a.m. at a private home in the beach community.

The president of University of South Carolina commented on the tragedy.

"Please pray for, think about the families that are involved and help one another. Be sensitive to other students whom you are in school with,  in your circle of friends, whether they're university students or from your home town," USC President Andrew Sorensen said.

Investigators say they're not sure what sparked the blaze early Sunday morning.

USC's dean of students, Dennis Pruitt, says the USC students were from the Delta Delta Delta sorority and the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

The victim's names are not expected to be released until the students' families are notified.

It took firefighters several hours to put out the blaze.

The fire was discovered by a newspaper delivery man. The Myrtle Beach Sun says Tim Burns called 911 when he saw smoke rising from the house on Scotland Street.

Burns watched two people jump from windows and several others running around the house looking for their friends.

Burns told the paper he couldn't hear screams from inside the house but that it was a hopeless feeling knowing there were people still inside.
