SAMPSON COUNTY -- With corn prices on the rise, some local pigs are eating candy with their corn meal.
Albert Smith, a local pork farmer, has replaced 5 percent of their normal feed with trail mix.
He says the pigs are quite fond of their new diet, adding that "they prefer trail mix with M&M's."
Jeff Hansen, a livestock nutritionist, says the dietary suppliments are good for them. He insists it is just a matter of "the same nutrients coming from other ingredients."
Smith estimates his savings will net around $25,000 this year.
