WILMINGTON -- Graves dating back to the 1700's in Porters Neck are on the same land that one developer wants to build on.

The land off Futch Creek Road is part of a new neighborhood development and holds at least 30 graves dating from 1796 to 1914.

The tombstones mark the resting places of old Wilmington families, Confederate soldiers and some even say slaves from nearby plantations.

The Saieed Development Company owns the land and wants to build two houses.

A representative says they are doing everything they can to have them moved.

One local cemetery caretaker says they'd be disrupting the dead and ignoring history.
