CAMP LEJEUNE -- A teenage surfer is recovering from a shark bite over the weekend.
Jake Poland, 16, was at the beach on Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base Saturday when he felt something hit his leg.
Poland thought a wave pushed his surfboard into him. But a friend saw his shredded shorts and a deep gash in his left thigh.
Poland was treated for the shark bite at Lejeune's Naval Hospital, where emergency personnel confirmed the bite.
A state aquarium official said that shark bites are rare along the North Carolina coast.
