Fundraiser to Help Abron Kelly After Surgery

WILMINGTON -- A fundraiser will be held for a little girl who seems to be winning her fight against a deadly disease.

Abron Kelly, 10, received a kidney in a surgery at Duke Hospital Tuesday night.

The initial indication was that the surgery was a success. But it is still early in determining whether her body would accept the new organ, after the second transplant for the Wilmington girl.

Her mother donated a kidney last year, but that operation did not work out.

Abron was set to receive a kidney from her father, but Duke Hospital called Tuesday to say that a matching kidney had been found. It had come from a 16-year-old girl who died in a car accident.

"The Kellys wanted to express their deepest sympathies to the family of a 16-year-old girl who died so their family has a chance to live," said Rev. Daniel Warnes, the family's minister. "So it's got sort of a bittersweet sort of message."

A benefit, featuring pianist Tim Buie, will be held for Abron Thursday night at Rossi's Italian Restaurant on Military Cutoff Road in Wilmington.
