MAY 28, 2006 -- Severe weather may be to blame for a fire that caused major damage to a church in Robeson County.

Fire officials are blaming a lightning strike for the fire at the Little Marsh Chapel AME Zion Church in St. Pauls.

The fire started around 8:30 Friday night in the church steeple. Firefighters had the blaze under control just after midnight. No one was injured.

Officials say the fire caused about $50,000 in damage to the church.

Four fire departments from the area were called to help fight the fire.
