MARCH 14, 2006 -- A Wilmington area motorcycle group is preparing for a first of its kind ride to help injured police officers and firefighters.
Members of the Carolina Coast Harley Davidson Club and the Harley Ownership Group local chapter are holding the first "Officer Down" ride on Saturday.
The event will take riders on a tour through Wilmington ending in a ceremony at City Hall.
The ride began as an idea to help local officers injured in the line of duty.
One example is Sergeant Mike Fey of the Wilmington Police Department. He was shot last July and his recovery continues.
The organizer says he hopes the idea catches on with motorcycle enthusiasts across the country and even around the globe.
