NOVEMBER 10, 2005 -- In a story WECT broke earlier this month, we released statistics from a new UNCW study. It showed New Hanover County kids, 11-, 12-, and 13-year-olds, are having sex.
WECT spoke with some local teens on the topic. They were very candid, letting us know exactly what they know about sex, what they don't know and how they want to help educate their peers.
Synergy is a group of teens from various middle and high schools in New Hanover County. Every Wednesday night Synergy meets to talk about how they can mentor their peers on various things affecting teenagers from stress to time management to sex.
They said they'd like to see more advocating for protection than just abstinence, and they like to talk about it with each other.
"When you see someone your age asking you this kind of stuff and telling you and making you aware of it, or someone who's been through that situation and who's your age and understands what's going on, it's a reality check," says Eryn Roberts.
The study shows half of all students have had intercourse by the end of high school, and it's not uncommon in sixth grade.
