APRIL 26, 2005 -- A tattoo is proving to be a critical piece of evidence in what appear to be two gang murders.
Authorities now know who turned up dead in the Waccamaw River. Authorities found the body of Tony Sanchez of Myrtle Beach. They say it's the origin of Sanchez's tattoos that could signal a violent gang is now active in our area.
Sanchez's body was discovered hours after Gilberto Aguayo's body was pulled from the Green Swamp in Brunswick County. The sheriff's department now believes both murders are connected to the Mara Salvatrucha or MS-13 Gang.
The latino gang is known nationwide for its brutality. More than 100 members were arrested across the county ealrier this year.
This is the first time the gang has made a presence in Brunswick County.
The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office is putting more resources into combating gangs, although the only real evidence is graffitti left behind.
Brunswick County does not have a gang task force.
The priority is getting information from anyone who knows about these murders and the MS-13 Gang.
