A local State Senator is throwing his support behind a candidate who some say is a hate monger.
Senator Thom Goolsby is holding a fundraiser for Jason "Molotov" Mitchell, who is running as a republican for the North Carolina Senate seat in District 16 in Wake County.
His challenger is current Senator Josh Stein, a democrat.
Mitchell is a conservative filmmaker and writer for World Net Daily.
He made national headlines for posting some videos smearing President Barack Obama, which supported the notion that the president was not born in America.
The Southern Poverty Law Center has included Mitchell on its list of extremists to watch due to his "Anti-LGBT" views. SPLC wrote that Mitchell calls himself a "Christian Supremacist".
In one of his videos, Mitchell endorsed a Ugandan bill that makes homosexuality punishable by death.
We asked Goolsby about that.
"I don't know what his stands are in Uganda," he said. "I don't know about that. I just know that what we're trying to do is get people elected that are going to make North Carolina the kind of state that we want it to be as far as sound fiscal footing."
Goolsby says he supports Mitchell because he supports things like lower taxes and responsible government.
"He has an uphill battle against one of the most entrenched leftists in the state who's a nice guy, I just disagree with Josh Stein on about everything he believes," Goolsby said.
