PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - It's been two years since Tiffany Dawkins, 23, a mother of two, was killed in Pender County.
Tuesday afternoon, those who knew her gathered at the site where authorities found her body, off of N.C. 133 in Rocky Point.
Her family and friends released balloons and stood around crosses and candles.
It's been a tough two years for the family, as they try to move on after losing Dawkins. They still don't really have closure.
The man suspected of killing Dawkins, her ex-boyfriend, Dwayne Moore, is dead. Authorities never had enough evidence to arrest Moore.
The US Marshals Service tracked him down and he killed himself in a Florida motel room.
Tiffany's mom, Kimberly Thomas, tells us that investigators don't believe that Moore acted alone.
"If there is somebody else out there, she (Tiffany) would want us to keep her name out there," said Thomas. "But we don't want her little girls to keep remembering it over and over. Just let them have a happy life."
Thomas said Moore was abusive to Dawkins and threatened to kill her days before the murder.
Thomas hopes her daughter's death will serve as a warning to other young women. She says if you are in an abusive relationship, "get out before it's too late."
Dawkins daughters are now ages 5 and 6.
Thomas vows to gather at the site every year to remember her daughter.
