"Easter Bunnies" need a new home after fire

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Coleen and Bill Sutherland lost their home and most of their pets in a fire that destroyed their home Monday morning. They're hoping their 40 rabbits can soon find new adoptive homes.

Around 11:30 a.m., a smoldering cigarette but ignited enough debris to take over the home. The Sutherland's have lived at 309 Pine Hills Drive for 17 years.

The house could not be saved and neither could most of the family pets. In total, 5 chinchillas, 2 guinea pigs, 1 hamster, 3 hermit crabs, 4 chicks, 2 sugar gliders, 1 dove, 4 finches, 4 dogs and two fish tanks were lost.

Three other dogs, four hermit crabs and a tortoise survived.

The rabbits were stored in a huts out back and were not affected by the fire.

Now that the Sutherland's are homeless, the bunnies are in need of new permanent residences.

Coleen is hoping they can be adopted in pairs to homes without snakes and to people who love animals as much as she does.

The male bunnies will need to be neutered.

If you are interested in adopting, call Coleen at: 910.232.3415.
