NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A car hit two bicyclists on River Road in New Hanover County Sunday morning, killing one person and critically injuring the other.
Troopers with the State Highway Patrol confirmed that Ronald Doolittle, II, 47, died on the scene.
His son, Ronald Doolittle, III, is in critical-life threatening condition at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Trey, as he is known, sustained a serious head injury.
WECT met with Trey's friends while they waited at the hospital for updates on his condition. Family friend Chelsea Edmonds was able to see how Trey is holding up.
"This is the most devastating thing that has ever happened to me and my family," said Edmonds, "but Trey's going to be okay and Trey being okay will make the rest of us okay."
Troopers said the driver of the car that hit the father and son is Thomas Grooms, 63.
Troopers report that he has been charged with felony death by motor vehicle, felony driving while impaired, open container, possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, among other charges. He is being held on a $500,000 bond.
The accident happened around 9 a.m. Sunday near Halyburton Memorial Parkway. River Road re-opened shortly after noon.
Deputies say the driver of the car and the bicyclists were traveling south on River Road, when the car swerved into the bike lane, striking the father and son.
