COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Columbus County might be interested in getting in the "bike week" game.
County Commissioner Edwin Russ says he'd like county officials to consider some type of event that would attract hundreds of motorcyclists to the area.
This week, the town of Carolina Beach voted down a proposal to endorse a bike week in that area. Events to attract bikers in Myrtle Beach have been a source of controversy for the past couple years.
Russ says Columbus County doesn't have the hotels and amenities like Carolina Beach, but he's sure they could figure out something.
"I'd love to see it come," Commissioner Edwin Russ said. "It would be good for the restaurants. Like the farm show this past weekend. We had probably 6 thousand people down there in Lake Waccamaw on Saturday. Parking was not a problem. We had plenty of places to be for the park. And there are plenty of places here in the county for the bikers to park their bikes and enjoy their selves."
Russ will meet with members of the county's tourism bureau on Friday to discuss the idea.
